Book 2: The Healer
The Healer in a sentence
Aldeah Walker didn’t want to live the way her destiny had devised, but without her protection, the world would suffer an incurable Black Plague.
The Healer Blurb
Aldeah Walker inherited a century old family treasure. The Dragon ring contains part of a bio-genetic code for the black plague virus. After she melded with the unique artifact, she acquired an unnatural ability to heal. Each time she heals, her body absorbs the wound. Unable to heal herself, she risks her life to save others while enemies attempt to kill her and take the powerful heirloom.
When Kruger Kelly had found a young man lying in the gutter all beaten and bloodied with his spiral blond hair, he figured the boy was related to Aldeah. He’d done everything in his power to stay away from the seductress. The brother of four sisters, he didn’t need more women in his life. But, his Good Samaritan tactics land him right in the middle of her web.
Siblings in jeopardy, Aldeah must choose to embrace her sworn duty to humanity and fight enemy fire with her fire—Dragon Master style.
Writer Commentary for The Healer
Title: The Healer
I wanted to write a strong series with a long arch. My complex Black Plague conspiracy theory supplies the avenue to this challenge.
Considering where it lands in the Dragon Ring Legend series, this is the perfect title for book two. I believe it starts branding and sets expectations. Each book is a character in the end battle between the protectors of mankind and powerful manipulators.
Chapter One
A deep breathe later, she picked up the shot and swallowed. Her face contorted with disgust as she swallowed. The laced fluid burned her throat all the way down to her stomach like turpentine. Her gag reflexes threaten, but she held herself in check. An involuntary flinch sparked the anger within her.
Following the pattern in book one, I wanted to start with Aldeah’s vulnerability. She’s forced to do things she doesn’t want to do including taking cough medicine. Her heart is in the right place, but she’s not ready to accept her destiny. She doesn’t want the responsibility. She wants to play and have fun. It’s ironic. Her form of fun IS kicking ass and protecting people.
She suddenly wanted Kruger Kelly to get the hell out of her house.
This is ironic again, she likes Kruger and blushes every time he looks or speaks to her. Instead, she tells herself that she hates him. I loved playing her against herself. How many of us believe one thing and live something else without knowing? Just cracks me up.
Chapter Two
Kruger rubbed the raw mark on his forearm certain he took a bullet for her hours ago, but the injury appeared fully healed. She had healed him before and he had gone against his investigative instincts to ignore the nuance. He figured Aldeah had some strange shit going on. He didn’t need to get involved—still didn’t.
I wanted to write about a hero with multiple female siblings. Kruger Kelly was born. He didn’t need more responsibility, yet, he’s always in the middle of something. With his sisters or his job, he has his hands full.
“Not playing tonight?” Dawson’s jutted his jaw towards the piano.
In this book, I focused special attention on some additional character traits. Heroines and heroes must have more to do than robot around in my book. This is what helps to make a character a person, in my head. The more I believe in my characters, the livelier the book becomes.
“Wang and his little brother, Kong, are currently in a war for power over the city’s drug running route.”
I had researched a drug cartel in Seattle for another book I wrote titled Lethal Kiss. Using my newfound knowledge, I created these brothers in Seattle’s international district. Considering the strong Asian influence in the area, I had great resources to get the culture right. It was a challenging experience, but well worth the extra work to get it right.
Chapter 3
At one time, she had everything she’d ever wanted. A man to love, a beautiful house, money in the bank, and a wonderful job that both challenged her and made her feel accomplished. She briefly smiled a little thinking about the past, but the corners of her mouth dropped to a grim line as soon as the key to her apartment dug into her hand.
I wanted to include characters from the other books. I love that when I read it. From naive friend to The Matchmaker in book one, to a scared heroine in book two. Deborah Blaine makes another appearance. This time she’s in the Hunter’s corner and doesn’t like where her life is going.
Being a double agent never pays off in the end.

Under a dark and gloomy sky in Seattle, I sit at my computer and type away. Oh, I didn’t start out a writer. I started out in computer programming at Colorado State University.
